Anesthesia and babies
Dear Dr. Mike,
My daughter needs to have cosmetic surgery on her hand. We have 3 opinions on when to do it. One plastic surgeon suggest doing it when she is 1 year old because of the anesthetics. However, she is only 3 months old and she weighs 15 pounds. The orthopedic we saw that just specializes in hands suggest doing the surgery at 6 months. The second plastic surgeon we saw suggest somewhere between 6 months and 1 year. I want to have it done at 6 months, so that her hand will be the way it will be when she begins using her hands more. My husband thinks there is more risk to her at 6 months than at 1 year.
My question – Is there anymore risk to an infant going under anesthetics at 6 months than at 12 months?
Thank you.
Hello!
I really admire your decision to seek a second and even a third opinion! Gathering different perspectives can be so valuable in making an informed choice.
Anesthesia risk is not only related to age but also to prematurity, your child’s overall health, and any underlying conditions that may necessitate delaying until she is older.
When it comes to anesthesia, it’s best to have it administered by a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist or a board-certified adult anesthesiologist who works frequently with children, who can help you make that determination. While most surgical procedures go smoothly without anesthesia complications, choosing a specialist in pediatrics can give you and the plastic surgeons greater peace of mind.
I hope this helps you feel more confident as you move forward!
Take care, Mike

You are great! We ALMOST want to come to the doctor :) I would like to Thank all of you for your great service. As a new mom sometimes I may have silly questions. Everyone on the phone, and in person have always made me feel like every question is important and I have always received a great answer to my question. I will continue to refer my friends and family to your practice. We are very happy and hope to add more of our own little patients to your practice. We are so grateful that we found an awesome group to take great care of our son. He actually asks when can we go to see you guys. You must be doing right when my son wants to go to the doctors.
We can't express how grateful we are for your office! Everyone there is so nice. I try to refer people there as often as I can, so I'm happy to hear about the additional staff and possible extended hours.
I really appreciate Dr. Pappas taking my calls in the middle of the night when my daughter is ill. It is a relief to know that I have someone to contact when she has a high fever or emergency situation after hours. Thank you!
