Febrile Seizure

HI DOCTOR. I HAVE AN 18 MONTHS OLD BABY THAT HAS A PRETTY HIGH FEVER, ...AS HE WAS ABOUT TO FALL ASLEEP, HE SUDDENLY HAD WHAT LOOKED TO ME LIKE A SEIZURE...WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP PREVENT ANYTHING LIKE THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING TO MY BABY BOY AGAIN. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME DOCTOR.

WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL! ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

First of all, you should take your child to see the Doctor immediately or to the closest emergency room.

What sounds like happened is that your child had a "febrile seizure" or convulsion because of a high body temperature. This may occur in any child in the age of six months to five years of age.

Although, febrile seizures can be very scary to parents, they usually do not cause any long-term problems to the children that have them, especially when they last < 5 minutes. There is no proven method to prevent febrile seizures from affecting your child. As I said, they usually occur with a very high body temperature. If your child has had a febrile seizure, he has a slightly increased chance of having another febrile seizure during his childhood. Febrile seizures DO NOT cause epilepsy.

What I think is more important, is that you must determine why your child has a high fever to have caused this seizure. Many causes may include ear infections, throat infections, urinary tract infections, or even possibly meningitis, which is an infection of the fluid around the brain. This is why I feel that it is very important for you to go to your doctor or emergency room right away to determine why your child had this high fever.

Thank you and I hope your child feels better, Dr. Mike.
