Dry Skin on Baby

Hi Dr. Mike,

My son is 2 1/2 months and he has very dry skin all over his face and head especially in his forehead it feels like sand paper, I asked the doctor and she said to use Aquaphor.  When I put the ointment it turns very red - but this is going on for 2 months and does not go away. I'm not sure what this is and what should I do?  One more thing....I'm little concern he was born with hair in his forehead and ears - will that go away?

Thank You,
Maricela   Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S

Ola Maricela,

Aquaphor is primarily made up of petrolatum (Vaseline). The idea of it is to keep the skin moisture in, and prevent dehydration of it.

The winter is bad for skin in all of us. The dry cold weather combined with our furnaces in the house, really dry up the air and our skin.

The best thing for dry skin is what you are doing. It may help also if you do the following:

  • Keep a vaporizer in your baby's room to keep the dryness down

  • Before putting him to bed at night, put Vaseline or Aquaphor on his face, and 2-3 times throughout the day.

By the way, your doc didn't make the diagnosis of neonatal acne, did he? Neonatal acne looks like pimples, whiteheads, and/or blackheads which appear on the head and neck. This resolves by 3 months of age (if you would like to read more about this, please click here).

In most likelihood, your son's dry skin will improve soon with the Spring time and warmer (and moister) weather.

Also, the hair in his ears and forehead will gradually fall out.

I hope that answers your question. Dr. Mike
