Deflux Comlpications

Dear Dr. Mike

Today, after 4 years of prophylactic antibiotic therapy for grade II kidney reflux, my daughter's urologist finally recommended more aggressive treatment. He asked us to choose between the conventional surgery to correct the reflux or the newly approved Deflux treatment. After doing some research, the Deflux for reflux seems too good to be true. Could you please advise me as to if there are side effects that I should be aware of? I am trying to make the most educated decision for my 8 year old who has been through much in the last four years. I'd like to avoid surgery, but am nervous about a new procedure.

Thank you for your time.  Very truly yours,

Elizabeth  Villa Park, IL

Dear Ms. B,

Deflux is a hot topic now. About six out of ten children are cured of this problem by one or two injections.

There are two main side effects: One out of six children will develop urinary tract infections again, and one out of 33 children will have his or her ureter enlarged by the procedure. Despite it's complications, it still has the potential to prevent surgery. Please feel free to click below on similar questions that I have answered:

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike

Thank you very much for your information. After checking out your suggested links, I will likely choose the Deflux therapy. Side effects considered, we can still resort to the conventional surgery. Thank you again....you're a gem for a worried mother's ring. :) Beth
