Constipation, too

Dear Dr. Mike,
I am eighteen years old, and a senior at a local high school. I have not
been able to use the restroom lately. I don't understand why. I do worry
and stress a lot because that is just the way that I am. I get very
bloated, and sometimes my jeans feel too tight. I have tried stool
softeners and laxatives, but everything makes my stomach cramp very badly.
When I do go, it is green. Should I see a doctor?
Thanks for your time

Hello,

Being constipated is one of the most frustrating things in the world. Despite the fact that it should be so natural, sometimes it just isn't.

Your question is not uncommon. Busy schedules, stress, diet, and inactivity all can contribute to constipation (for more on constipation, please click here

.

I think it's best to sit down with a doctor (whom you trust, or other people have recommended to you), and let him or her know about what's been going on, and what laxatives or stool softeners you have been using.

In the meantime, try and incorporate some fiber into your diet: apples, prunes, salads, etc. Also, start taking some fiber drinks, e.g. Metamucil, once a day. You can buy this in any grocery or drugstore.

Once you become "regular", you will feel a lot better.

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike
