Hi
Sue, It's a little too early in his life for it to be "psychological" or
"wanting attention". Laxatives are helpful, as long as they are given
appropriately, and give the desired response (1 bowel movement a day).
A
child who has never been "regular" may benefit with a visit to a board
certified pediatric gastroenterologist, who specializes in children's
bowel problems. He or she can also begin a structured approach to the
resolution of your nephew's constipation.
I
hope that helps. Dr. Mike
