Constipation in 3 Year Old

Dear Dr Mike, My 3 year-old nephew lives in Detroit, Michigan, USA and has a problem moving his bowels. He says it hurts and doesn't go for days. It's a struggle every time he DOES go. Recently, my sister's Dr. suggested he take a laxitive which has helped, but it's still a problem.

Is there a name for this? I've known other children to have the same problem and I've heard that it's psychological - a 'control' problem. Is this true? Also, could part of it be wanting attention? Thanks for any information you can give me. Sue

Hi Sue, It's a little too early in his life for it to be "psychological" or "wanting attention". Laxatives are helpful, as long as they are given appropriately, and give the desired response (1 bowel movement a day).

A child who has never been "regular" may benefit with a visit to a board certified pediatric gastroenterologist, who specializes in children's bowel problems. He or she can also begin a structured approach to the resolution of your nephew's constipation.

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike
