Constipation is Terrible

Dear Dr. Mike: My baby is 1 month old and is having terrible constipation, gas and abdominal cramping or straining (I'm not sure which). The Dr. put him on Enfamil AR (that is the formula with rice starch already in it) because I could not get him full. He always acts like he is hungry and will eat whatever is in the bottle. My question is what formula would best help him. It seems like the Enfamil AR is constipating him just like the Similac with Iron did. I am having to give him Colace just about every other day to help him have a BM. He strains so hard he almost turns purple. I have discussed this with several Dr. I am suppose to meet with another tomorrow but I was hoping you might have an answer.

Thanks, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I would not get in the habit of giving your 1 month old colace. You'll get him to need it all the time. Your little one is probably experiencing some colic (for more click here http://www.intensivecaring.com/colic1.htm). He's a little too young for rice cereal (for more click here http://www.intensivecaring.com/Feeding5weekold.htm). If he's hungry, feed him till he's full (for more click here http://www.intensivecaring.com/hungry_2_month_old.htm). As long as his bowel movements are essentially normal (for more click here http://www.intensivecaring.com/no_bowel_movements.htm), and he is growing normally, I would just feed him any of the conventional formulas (Similac, Enfamil, etc.).

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike
