Chicken Pox?

Dr. Mike,

My daughter is 2 1/2 and we thought she had a slight case of the chicken pox. She had spots under her arms an a few on her behind but nothing major. She did run a temperature of 102 and then it dropped and she appeared fine, no temp and no itching. Now, 5 days later she is complaining that her front teeth hurt and she has a small cold sore on her lip inner), her gums are also red. I don't see any other spots or sores anywhere. Any clue?

                                                                                                                           Thank You,
                                                                                                                                     Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

You couldn't even send me a picture to help, huh?

Well...anyway. I'll give you the lowdown on chicken pox, and you can see if it fits your daughter.

  • They usually occur in late winter or early spring.

  • Children usually have a history of exposure, i.e. somebody your daughter knows already has them.

  • Vesicles (pimples with clear fluid in them) appear on the face, scalp and trunk, and then spread

  • Low grade fever lasts 3-4 days

One way or the other, a 2 1/2 year old with a rash (as you have described), I would want to see in my office. There are some other infections and/or viruses, e.g. roseola, and hand-foot-mouth disease that give a similar picture. I would want to "take a look" for myself. Have your doc take a look.

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike
