Canker Sores

Hi, i was wondering weather or not you could help me. I'm 17 years old, and
I have been getting sores on my tongue. But they won't be there all the
time, they come and go. They won't really bother me its just annoying
knowing that they are there. They are little red spots sometimes they have a
little white (looks kindda gooie) with them especally when i wake up....if you
have any idea what this is please e-mail me back.

                                                                                                                           Thank You,
                                                                                                                                     Kristin

Hi Kristin,

It sounds like you are describing canker sores.

A canker sore is a benign sore which can appear on the tongue or inside cheek. It is generally white or yellow with a bright redness around it. Most are painful.

Canker sores appear in women more than men, especially between the ages of 10 and 40. No one knows the true cause of them, but it seems that they "pop up" after dental procedures or by accidentally biting your lip or tongue while chewing. They can also be triggered by stress, your period, and even a lack of a certain vitamin (e.g. folic acid).

The best home remedy is to put some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton tip and dab it on the sore. Then, apply some milk of magnesia on it also, 4 times a day.

They usually last 10 days to 3 weeks.

I hope that helps. Dr. Mike
